Prepping for Playdate Success: Helping Your Child Share Control
Alisha Williamson, Ed.S.

Does your child like to take charge during playdates? Maybe you’ve seen this first-hand or heard feedback from fellow parents. Here's some ideas to help prep your child for a successful playdate.

Before the Playdate:

  • Talk with your child about taking turns and what might happen during play
  • Practice give-and-take through pretend play: "Let's play Legos for 10 minutes, then switch to a board game"
  • Chat about how to handle leaving when it's time to go home

During the Playdate:

  • Show up early to give a 10-minute heads-up before leaving
  • Give a 5-minute warning if needed
  • If they get upset, talk to them one-on-one

Key Takeaway: A little preparation goes a long way.  By discussing potential challenges and practicing solutions beforehand, you're giving your child valuable social skills that make playdates more fun for everyone involved.
